Salary Breakdown Calculator (VND)
Job offers in Vietnam are almost always quoted as an annual package — say 360.000.000 VND a year. That number is hard to reason about day to day: rent is monthly, a contractor's day rate is daily, and freelance or overtime work is priced by the hour. This calculator is annual-first: type the yearly gross figure and it splits it straight into every common pay frequency so you can compare offers on the same footing.
For a 360.000.000 VND/year package on a 40-hour week, the breakdown is 30.000.000 VND/month, 15.000.000 VND if you are paid twice a month, 13.846.154 VND every two weeks, 6.923.077 VND/week, 1.384.615 VND/day and 173.077 VND/hour. Every figure here is gross — before compulsory social insurance and personal income tax are withheld. To see what actually lands in your account, follow up with FiMo's gross-to-net calculator.
One distinction trips up almost everyone: being paid semi-monthly (twice a month, 24 cheques a year) is not the same as biweekly (every two weeks, 26 cheques a year). Because 52 weeks divide into 26 fortnights, a biweekly schedule produces more, slightly smaller payments — 13.846.154 VND versus 15.000.000 VND — even though the annual total is identical. Knowing this stops you from thinking your pay was cut when you switch to an employer on a different cycle.
How the breakdown is computed
The core divisions
The tool holds the annual package fixed and divides by the number of pay periods in a year:
| Pay period | Formula | Periods/year |
|---|---|---|
| Monthly | Annual ÷ 12 | 12 |
| Semi-monthly (twice a month) | Annual ÷ 24 | 24 |
| Biweekly (every two weeks) | Annual ÷ 26 | 26 |
| Weekly | Annual ÷ 52 | 52 |
| Daily | Weekly ÷ 5 | ~260 |
| Hourly | Annual ÷ (hours/week × 52) | hours/week × 52 |
Why 52 weeks and a 5-day week? A calendar year is 52 weeks plus a day or two, so 52 is the standard divisor for a weekly figure; a standard working week is 5 days, so the daily rate is the weekly figure ÷ 5. The hourly rate divides the annual salary by total hours worked in a year = hours per week × 52. On a 40-hour week that is 40 × 52 = 2.080 hours/year.
Why biweekly ≠ semi-monthly
This is the single most common mix-up. Semi-monthly means exactly two payments a month → 24 a year. Biweekly means one payment every 14 days → 26 a year (52 ÷ 2). The same annual package divided by 26 gives a smaller per-cheque number than dividing by 24, so do not assume your pay shrank just because each payment is smaller — the yearly total is unchanged.
These are GROSS figures, not take-home
Every number above is before tax and insurance. In Vietnam, employees have compulsory insurance (social, health, and unemployment for Vietnamese staff) and progressive personal income tax withheld before money reaches their account. This tool does not model any of that — it does one job: split the annual package by period. Take-home is the gross-to-net calculator's job.
What the model leaves out
The model assumes pay is spread evenly across the year and excludes the 13th-month salary, Tet bonus, commissions and variable allowances common in Vietnam. If your contract itemises those separately, enter only the fixed base salary so the conversion stays accurate.
Worked example: a 360.000.000 VND/year package on a 40-hour week
Assumptions: pay spread evenly across the year, a 40-hour week over 5 days, and gross figures (before insurance and tax).
| Pay period | Periods/year | Pay per period |
|---|---|---|
| Monthly | 12 | 30.000.000 |
| Semi-monthly | 24 | 15.000.000 |
| Biweekly | 26 | 13.846.154 |
| Weekly | 52 | 6.923.077 |
| Daily | ~260 | 1.384.615 |
| Hourly | 2.080 | 173.077 |
Three takeaways.
- Monthly vs biweekly. The 30.000.000 VND monthly figure looks bigger than 13.846.154 VND every two weeks, but a year has 12 monthly periods against 26 biweekly ones — multiply each out and both return 360.000.000 VND.
- The hour is the common denominator. Reducing everything to 173.077 VND/hour lets you compare a salaried role directly against a day rate or a freelance hourly quote. If someone offers you 173.077 VND/hour for comparable work, that matches a 360.000.000 VND/year package. Push the package to 600.000.000 VND/year and the hourly rate rises to 288.462 VND/hour (50.000.000 VND/month, 11.538.462 VND/week).
- This is still gross. What reaches your account is lower after insurance and PIT. Use the gross-to-net calculator for take-home, and the hourly-to-salary tool if you want to work the other way — from an hourly rate up to an annual package.
Frequently asked questions
What is a 360 million VND annual salary per month?
A 360.000.000 VND annual package divided by 12 is 30.000.000 VND/month gross (before insurance and tax). In other periods that is 6.923.077 VND/week, 1.384.615 VND/day and 173.077 VND/hour on a 40-hour week. For the amount that actually reaches your account after compulsory insurance and personal income tax, use the gross-to-net calculator next.
How do you convert an annual salary to an hourly rate?
Hourly rate = annual salary ÷ (hours per week × 52). On a 40-hour week, total annual hours are 40 × 52 = 2.080. So a 360.000.000 VND/year package equals 360.000.000 ÷ 2.080 = 173.077 VND/hour. Work longer weeks for the same annual figure and the hourly rate falls; the calculator lets you change the hours-per-week input to see this.
What is the difference between biweekly and semi-monthly pay?
It is the number of pay periods. Semi-monthly means two payments a month → 24 a year; biweekly means one every two weeks → 26 a year, because there are 52 weeks. On a 360.000.000 VND/year package, semi-monthly pays 15.000.000 VND per cheque while biweekly pays 13.846.154 VND — smaller because it is split across more periods, though the annual total is identical.
Are these figures gross or take-home pay?
Every figure here is gross — before compulsory insurance (social, health, unemployment) and progressive personal income tax. This tool only splits the annual package by pay period; it does not apply any deductions. Your take-home will be below the 30.000.000 VND/month shown in the example. Run the gross-to-net calculator to see the actual amount deposited.
Should I include my Tet bonus or 13th-month salary in the annual figure?
It depends on what you are measuring. To convert your fixed, regular pay into monthly/weekly/hourly equivalents, leave out the Tet bonus, commissions and 13th-month salary — they are not paid every period and would distort the hourly rate. To see your total annual income as a monthly average, add everything in and divide by 12. Enter the figure that matches your question.
How is the daily rate calculated?
The daily rate is the weekly figure ÷ 5 working days. For a 360.000.000 VND/year package the weekly figure is 6.923.077 VND, so the daily rate is 1.384.615 VND/day. This is handy when comparing a salaried role against a contractor's day rate. Note it assumes a 5-day week; if your workplace runs 6 days, the per-day figure changes accordingly.
