Hourly to Salary Calculator (VND)
If you are paid by the hour in Vietnam — teaching English, consulting, or working as a remote contractor quoting rates in dong — a number like "100.000 VND/hour" doesn't tell you what you actually earn over a month or a year. To compare an hourly rate against a fixed-salary offer, or just to budget, you need to scale that single rate across pay periods. That is exactly what this tool does: enter your hourly rate, the hours you work per week and the weeks you work per year, and it returns the weekly, monthly and annual equivalents.
The conversion is pure arithmetic, no assumptions about markets: annual pay = hourly rate × hours per week × weeks per year, and monthly pay = annual ÷ 12. At 100.000 VND an hour, working 40 hours a week for 52 weeks, you earn 17.333.333 VND a month and 208.000.000 VND a year — equivalent to 4.000.000 VND a week and 800.000 VND a day (on a 5-day week). The calculator also works in reverse: take a monthly salary, multiply by 12, and divide by your annual hours to recover the implied hourly rate.
One thing to keep front of mind: every figure here is gross — before personal income tax and compulsory insurance. Your take-home will be lower once those are withheld (for employees on a labour contract; hourly/casual arrangements may be taxed differently, so check the current rules). To see the net amount that actually reaches your account, pair this with FiMo's gross-to-net calculator.
How the calculator converts pay
From an hourly rate to everything else
Four identities do all the work — there is no modelling, just multiplication and division:
Annual = hourly rate × hours per week × weeks per year Monthly = annual ÷ 12 Weekly = hourly rate × hours per week Daily = hourly rate × (hours per week ÷ 5)
| Symbol | Meaning | Default |
|---|---|---|
| Hourly rate | What you are paid per hour worked | 100.000 VND |
| Hours/week | Hours worked in a typical week | 40 |
| Weeks/year | Weeks you actually work and are paid for | 52 |
Why divide the annual figure by 12 to get the monthly, rather than multiplying weekly pay by ~4.33? Dividing the year by 12 spreads all your working weeks evenly, including the months that contain a fifth week, so the monthly number is stable and reconciles with the annual. The daily figure uses a 5-day working week to split weekly pay.
The reverse: from a salary to an hourly rate
Hourly rate = (monthly salary × 12) ÷ (hours per week × weeks per year)
This is the calculation you want when sizing up a salaried offer against your current hourly rate. A 30.000.000 VND/month offer at 40 hours a week for 52 weeks works out to roughly 173.077 VND an hour, or 360.000.000 VND a year gross.
Why "weeks per year" matters so much
The default of 52 weeks assumes you are paid for all 52 — the salaried case, with paid leave. If you are an hourly worker who is not paid when you take time off, lower the weeks to match reality: say 48 weeks if you take 4 unpaid weeks off. At the same 100.000 VND/hour and 40 hours a week, annual gross then falls from 208.000.000 to 192.000.000 VND. This unpaid-time gap is the single biggest difference between hourly and salaried pay.
What the model leaves out
The tool computes gross pay assuming steady hours and weeks. It does not add a higher overtime premium, does not deduct tax or insurance, and does not handle weeks where you work much more or less than usual. Treat the result as a like-for-like comparison figure, then run the gross-to-net and overtime tools for a number closer to your wallet.
Worked example: 100.000 VND/hour, 40 hours/week, 52 weeks/year
Assumptions: steady hours and weeks, figures are gross (before tax and insurance), and the daily figure uses a 5-day week.
| Pay period | Amount (gross) | How it's derived |
|---|---|---|
| Per hour | 100.000 | the input rate |
| Per day | 800.000 | 100.000 × (40 ÷ 5) |
| Per week | 4.000.000 | 100.000 × 40 |
| Per month | 17.333.333 | 208.000.000 ÷ 12 |
| Per year | 208.000.000 | 100.000 × 40 × 52 |
Three things to read off this.
- Hourly-to-monthly is not "times four". Multiplying 4.000.000 VND/week by 4 undercounts, because a year holds 52 weeks, not 48. The correct route is annual ÷ 12, so the 17.333.333 VND monthly figure already absorbs the extra weeks.
- Part-time scales almost linearly. Keep 100.000 VND/hour but drop to 20 hours a week and monthly pay falls to 8.666.667 VND, annual to 104.000.000 VND — exactly half, because the hours halved.
- This is gross. After personal income tax and compulsory insurance, take-home is below 17.333.333 VND a month. Use the gross-to-net tool for the final figure.
To compare a salaried offer with your hourly rate, enter the salary and invert the formula: 30.000.000 VND/month at 40 hours a week is about 173.077 VND an hour.
Frequently asked questions
How do I convert an hourly rate to a monthly salary?
Multiply the hourly rate by hours per week and weeks per year to get annual pay, then divide by 12 for the monthly figure. Example: 100.000 VND/hour × 40 hours/week × 52 weeks = 208.000.000 VND/year, divided by 12 is 17.333.333 VND/month. These are gross figures, before tax and insurance.
How do I convert a salary back to an hourly rate?
Use hourly rate = (monthly salary × 12) ÷ (hours per week × weeks per year). For example, a 30.000.000 VND/month offer at 40 hours a week for 52 weeks is about 173.077 VND an hour. This is how you compare a fixed-salary job against the hourly rate you currently charge.
Why not just multiply weekly pay by 4 to get monthly?
Because a year has about 52 weeks, which averages roughly 4.33 weeks per month, not 4. Multiplying by 4 undercounts your pay. The correct method is annual pay (hourly × hours/week × 52) divided by 12, which spreads the months with a fifth week evenly. In the example that gives 17.333.333 VND/month rather than a lower, wrong figure.
What should I put for weeks per year?
If you are salaried with paid leave, use 52 weeks (paid for the whole year). If you are paid hourly and earn nothing when you take time off, lower it to match reality — for instance 48 weeks if you take 4 unpaid weeks off. The effect is large: at 100.000 VND/hour and 40 hours a week, annual gross moves from 208.000.000 to 192.000.000 VND.
Is the result gross or take-home pay?
It is gross — before personal income tax and compulsory insurance. Your take-home is lower once those are withheld for employees on a labour contract; casual or per-hour arrangements may be taxed differently, so check the current rules. To see the net amount, run FiMo's gross-to-net calculator on the 17.333.333 VND/month from the example above.
Does this include overtime pay?
No. The calculator assumes a steady 40 hours a week at one flat rate and does not add the higher premium most jurisdictions require for overtime. If part of your week is paid at an overtime multiplier, compute the base portion here and use FiMo's overtime calculator for the premium hours, then add them together for true gross pay.
