Vietnam Overtime Pay Calculator (VND)
In Vietnam, overtime is not paid at your normal hourly rate. The Labour Code 2019 (Article 98) requires employers to pay a premium that depends on when the extra hours fall: at least 150% on an ordinary working day, at least 200% on a weekly rest day (typically the weekend), and at least 300% on a public holiday or paid-leave day — and that 300% is on top of the holiday pay you already receive for not working. Night work adds a further premium of at least 30% of the normal hourly rate.
Every one of those percentages multiplies your normal hourly wage, which is simply your monthly salary divided by the standard paid hours in the month. A 15.000.000 VND salary across 208 standard hours works out to 72.115 VND an hour, so a single weekend overtime hour is worth 144.231 VND — double a normal hour. Put together a typical month of 10 weekday overtime hours and 8 weekend hours and the overtime alone adds 2.235.577 VND, pushing gross pay for the month to 17.235.577 VND — roughly 13% of that payslip.
The calculator above takes your monthly salary, your standard monthly hours and the overtime hours by day type, then returns the hourly wage, the pay for each overtime category and your gross with overtime included. One thing to keep in mind: the result is pre-tax overtime pay. It still counts toward personal income tax and the compulsory insurance base, which are computed separately. Use it as a check against your payslip — if your employer is paying less than these 150 / 200 / 300% rates, you are being short-changed.
How Vietnamese overtime pay is calculated
Step 1 — Your normal hourly wage
Hourly wage = Monthly salary ÷ Standard paid hours in the month
| Symbol | Meaning |
|---|---|
| Monthly salary | Your contractual monthly salary (default 15.000.000 VND) |
| Standard hours | Normal working hours in the month (default 208h ≈ 26 days × 8h) |
| Hourly wage | 15.000.000 ÷ 208 = 72.115 VND/hour |
The standard-hours figure varies by employer (commonly 26 working days × 8 hours). Enter your own so the hourly rate matches how payroll computes it.
Step 2 — Apply the statutory multiplier for each day type
Overtime pay = Hours × Hourly wage × Multiplier
| Day type | Minimum rate (Art. 98, Labour Code 2019) |
|---|---|
| Ordinary working day | 150% |
| Weekly rest day (weekend) | 200% |
| Public holiday / paid leave | 300% |
These are floors, not fixed rates — an employer may pay more but never less. For holidays, the 300% is the overtime component only; it does not include the regular holiday pay you receive anyway for that day, so working a public holiday pays even more once both are combined.
Night work
Overtime performed at night (legally 22:00–06:00) earns an extra at least 30% of the daytime hourly wage on top of the overtime multiplier above, plus a further component for the night portion of the overtime. The calculator focuses on the three common day types; if your shift is at night, add the night premium accordingly.
What the model leaves out
The tool computes pre-tax overtime pay from your hourly rate and the statutory multipliers. It does not deduct personal income tax or insurance — those depend on total income, dependents and the insurance base, so pair it with FiMo's gross-to-net and social-insurance calculators. The law also caps total overtime (no more than 40 hours a month and 200–300 hours a year depending on the sector); the calculator does not block inputs above those limits.
Worked example: a 15.000.000 VND salary, 10h weekday + 8h weekend overtime
Assume 208 standard hours a month, so the hourly wage is 15.000.000 ÷ 208 = 72.115 VND/hour. Apply the statutory multiplier to each day type:
| Overtime type | Hours | Rate | Overtime pay |
|---|---|---|---|
| Weekday (150%) | 10 | 150% | 1.081.731 |
| Weekend (200%) | 8 | 200% | 1.153.846 |
| Public holiday (300%) | 0 | 300% | 0 |
| Total overtime | 18 | 2.235.577 |
Three things stand out.
- Same hours, different money. The 8 weekend hours (1.153.846 VND) earn almost as much as the 10 weekday hours (1.081.731 VND) despite being two hours fewer — because the weekend rate (200%) outweighs the weekday rate (150%).
- The premium over a normal hour is 937.500 VND. Paid at the plain rate, these 18 hours would be worth only 1.298.077 VND; the overtime multipliers add exactly 937.500 VND on top.
- Gross pay for the month rises to 17.235.577 VND, with overtime making up about 13% of it.
Now add a holiday: just 6 hours worked on a public holiday at 300% is worth 1.298.077 VND — and that is before the regular holiday pay you keep for the day. Enter your real hours to reconcile against your payslip; if the numbers fall below the 150 / 200 / 300% floors, raise it with HR.
Frequently asked questions
How is overtime pay calculated in Vietnam?
First work out your normal hourly wage = monthly salary ÷ standard paid hours. Then multiply by the statutory rate for the day type: 150% on an ordinary day, 200% on a weekly rest day, 300% on a public holiday. Example: a 15.000.000 VND salary over 208 hours is 72.115 VND/hour. Working 10h weekday plus 8h weekend overtime adds 2.235.577 VND.
What are the overtime rates for weekdays, weekends and holidays?
Under Article 98 of the Labour Code 2019, the minimums are: 150% on an ordinary working day, 200% on a weekly rest day, and 300% on a public holiday or paid-leave day, all applied to your normal hourly wage. At 72.115 VND/hour in our example, one weekday hour is worth 108.173 VND, a weekend hour 144.231 VND, and a holiday hour 216.346 VND. These are floors — employers may pay more, never less.
How do I work out my hourly wage for overtime?
Your hourly wage = monthly salary divided by the standard paid hours in the month. Standard hours are commonly 26 working days × 8 hours = 208 hours. For a 15.000.000 VND salary that is 15.000.000 ÷ 208 = 72.115 VND/hour. Every overtime multiplier (150 / 200 / 300%) is applied to this number, so enter your employer's actual standard hours to make the result match your payslip.
Does holiday overtime include the regular holiday pay?
No — the 300% is the overtime component only. It does not include the holiday pay you already receive for that day even if you do not work. So when you work a public holiday you get your holiday pay plus the 300% overtime. In the example, 6 hours of holiday overtime is worth 1.298.077 VND in overtime alone, on top of the regular holiday pay.
How much extra is paid for night overtime?
Overtime worked at night (22:00–06:00) earns an extra at least 30% of the daytime hourly wage, in addition to the day-type overtime multiplier, plus a further amount for the night portion of the overtime. This calculator covers the three common day types (weekday, weekend, holiday); if your shift falls at night, add the night premium on top of the figure it gives you.
Is overtime pay taxed and subject to social insurance in Vietnam?
Overtime counts toward income, so it affects personal income tax and insurance — but with a wrinkle: the portion paid above the ordinary hourly rate (the overtime "premium") is generally exempt from personal income tax. This tool returns pre-tax overtime pay. To get your take-home figure, combine it with FiMo's gross-to-net and social-insurance calculators, and check the exempt portion with your payroll team.
