The interest rate is an illustrative assumption, not a quoted bank rate. Enter the rate you actually earn for your own result.

Why it matters

Every savings plan comes down to a date. Knowing the timeline turns a vague goal into a plan: you can see whether to save more each month, start sooner, or accept a longer wait. Compounding shortens the timeline, but the size of your monthly saving usually matters more on short horizons.

Every savings plan eventually comes down to a date. You have a target — an emergency fund, an apartment deposit, a fund to relocate — and the real question is "when will I actually have it?" This calculator answers that directly: enter your goal, the amount you have saved so far, how much you save each month, and an expected interest rate, and it returns the number of months (and the equivalent in years) until your balance reaches the goal, along with how much of that total is your own money versus interest.

What makes this more useful than dividing the goal by your monthly saving is that it accounts for compounding. Vietnamese banks let you hold money in fixed-term deposits and roll over principal plus interest at maturity. When you do that, each month your balance rises by both your new deposit and the interest earned on everything already in the account. Because the balance keeps growing, the monthly interest grows too, so you hit the target sooner than a zero-interest piggy bank would allow.

The example used throughout this page: a goal of 500.000.000 VND, 100.000.000 VND already saved, 15.000.000 VND/month set aside, at an illustrative 5%/year. The result is 2 yr 1 mo (25 months): you personally contribute 475.000.000 VND and interest adds 31.223.307 VND. With no interest at all, the same plan would take 2 yr 3 mo — 2 months longer.

One caveat applies to everything here: the 5%/year rate is an illustrative assumption, not a quote. Real VND deposit rates vary by bank, tenor and date — replace it with the rate you actually earn for a result that fits your situation.

How the calculator finds your timeline

A month-by-month simulation

There is no clean one-line formula when you mix a starting balance, regular contributions and compounding, so the calculator simulates each month exactly the way a rolled-over term deposit behaves:

  1. At the start of each month, add your monthly saving (PMT) to the balance.
  2. At the end of the month, multiply the balance by (1 + monthly rate).
  3. Repeat until the balance meets or exceeds the goal; count the months elapsed.

The effective monthly rate is derived from the annual rate as r_m = (1 + r_annual)^(1/12) − 1, the same convention used across FiMo's tools, so one year of growth equals exactly (1 + r_annual).

The inputs

SymbolMeaning
GoalThe amount you want to accumulate
Current savingsWhat you already have set aside
PMTThe amount you save every month
r_annualExpected annual rate (5% = 0.05 — an illustrative assumption)
OutputMonths until balance ≥ Goal

Why interest shortens the timeline

With no interest, the balance grows in a straight line and the time is simply (Goal − Current savings) ÷ PMT. With compounding, every month the balance earns a bonus proportional to its own size, and that bonus grows as you approach the goal. In the example above, the 5%/year assumption cuts the timeline from 2 yr 3 mo (no interest) down to 2 yr 1 mo.

What the model ignores

It assumes a constant rate, uninterrupted monthly saving, and no taxes, fees or inflation. In reality deposit rates reset at each rollover, and big-ticket goals can get more expensive over time. Treat the result as a planning scenario, not a guarantee. If you want to work the other way — fix a deadline and solve for the monthly amount required — use FiMo's savings goal calculator instead.

Worked example: a 500.000.000 VND goal with 100.000.000 VND already saved

Illustrative assumptions: a constant 5%/year, 15.000.000 VND saved at the start of every month, principal and interest rolled over, no withdrawals, no taxes or fees.

Monthly saving15.000.000
Time to goal2 yr 1 mo (25 months)
Total you contribute475.000.000
Interest earned31.223.307

After 25 months the balance reaches roughly 506.223.307 VND, just crossing the 500.000.000 VND target. Of that, only 475.000.000 VND comes out of your own pocket; the remaining 31.223.307 VND is interest the bank pays you for leaving the money to compound.

Comparing your options

OptionTime to 500.000.000 VND
Piggy bank, no interest, 15.000.000/month2 yr 3 mo
5%/year, 15.000.000/month2 yr 1 mo
5%/year, smaller 10.000.000/month3 years

Two levers stand out. Interest shaves 2 months off the timeline with no extra effort from you. The monthly amount is even more powerful in reverse: dropping from 15.000.000 to 10.000.000 VND/month stretches the timeline from 2 yr 1 mo to 3 years. For short-horizon goals, the size of your monthly saving dominates; for long-horizon goals, compounding does more of the work. Remember the rate is only an assumption — enter the rate your bank actually posts to see your own numbers.

Frequently asked questions

How does the time to save calculator work?

Enter your goal, your current savings, your monthly saving and an expected rate. The tool simulates month by month: it adds your contribution at the start of each month, applies the monthly interest, and repeats until the balance reaches the goal, counting the months. Example: a 500.000.000 VND goal with 100.000.000 VND saved and 15.000.000 VND/month at an illustrative 5%/year takes 2 yr 1 mo.

How long to save 500 million VND saving 15 million a month?

Starting from 100.000.000 VND already saved, at an illustrative 5%/year: saving 15.000.000 VND/month reaches the 500.000.000 VND goal in 2 yr 1 mo (25 months). You contribute 475.000.000 VND of your own money and interest adds 31.223.307 VND. Starting from zero would take longer — enter your real starting balance for an accurate timeline.

How much does interest speed up reaching a goal?

In the worked example, saving the same 15.000.000 VND/month: a zero-interest piggy bank takes 2 yr 3 mo, while earning 5%/year takes only 2 yr 1 mo — 2 months faster with no extra effort. Interest helps less on short goals and much more on long ones, because compounding needs time to build.

Is it better to save more each month or chase a higher rate?

For short and medium horizons, saving more each month wins. Holding the rate at 5%/year but cutting the monthly amount from 15.000.000 to 10.000.000 VND stretches the timeline from 2 yr 1 mo to 3 years. Interest only rewards the balance you already hold, so it takes time to matter; the money you add hits immediately.

Are the interest rates here real Vietnamese bank rates?

No. The 5%/year used in every example is an illustrative assumption chosen to keep the math easy to verify. Actual VND deposit rates differ by bank, tenor and date, and change over time. Look up the current posted rate and enter it — the calculation behaves identically at any rate.

Does the calculator account for inflation and tax?

No. It models nominal cash flows only — your contributions plus compound interest, with no inflation, tax or fees deducted. The purchasing power of your goal may erode over time, and savings interest can be taxable in some cases. Treat the output as a planning scenario, and pair it with FiMo's inflation calculator to gauge the real-terms result.

What if I save nothing each month?

If your monthly saving is zero and there is no interest, the balance never grows, so the goal is never reached. With a positive rate, your existing balance still compounds and eventually reaches the goal, just very slowly. The calculator reflects this — in practice, hitting a goal on a sensible timeline almost always requires a steady monthly contribution.
