If you save and invest in Vietnam, the milestone everyone talks about is "1 tỷ" — one billion dong. It is the local equivalent of "becoming a millionaire": enough for an apartment deposit, a solid emergency fund, or simply the peace of mind of a seven-figure (in dong) net worth. The useful question is not whether a billion is a lot, but "at my current saving rate, how many years until I get there?" This tool answers exactly that: enter what you have today, how much you add each month, and an assumed return, and it simulates month by month until the balance reaches 1.000.000.000 VND.

Take a concrete illustrative scenario. You start with 50.000.000 VND, add 5.000.000 VND every month, and assume a 9%/year return. With those inputs the balance crosses one billion dong in about 9.6 years (115 months). Of the final amount, 625.000.000 VND is money you actually paid in and 386.280.264 VND is interest generated by compounding — effectively a free extra contribution earned through patience.

The two strongest levers are how much you add each month and time in the market. Leave the 50.000.000 VND untouched with no contributions, still at 9%/year, and it takes about 34.8 years to reach a billion; raising the monthly amount shortens the timeline dramatically, as the table below shows. One important caveat: the 9%/year used here is an illustrative assumption to keep the arithmetic easy to follow — not a quoted deposit rate or a promised investment return. Real returns vary by asset, by bank and by period, so plug in a figure that fits your own situation.

How the calculator finds the timeline

A month-by-month simulation

Rather than a closed-form equation, the tool simulates the cash flow one month at a time until the balance hits the target. Each month has two steps:

  1. Add the contribution at the start of the month: balance += monthly contribution (PMT).
  2. Apply growth: balance × (1 + r_m), where r_m = (1 + r)^(1/12) − 1 is the effective monthly rate derived from the annual rate r.

The loop stops at the first month where balance ≥ target. This is exactly how the widget above runs, so you can reconcile every figure.

The three output numbers

  • Years to target: the simulated months, expressed in years.
  • Total contributed: starting amount plus every monthly contribution paid in by the time you reach the goal.
  • Interest earned: final balance minus total contributed — the compounding tailwind you did not have to work for.

Why contributions matter so much

Every dong added early has more time to compound than a dong added late. Increasing the monthly contribution therefore both adds directly to the balance and enlarges the base on which compounding works, so the time-to-target falls faster than intuition suggests. FiMo also has a dedicated Compound Interest tool and a Savings Goal tool for the inverse question — given a deadline, what monthly amount do you need?

What the model leaves out

The simulation assumes a constant return for the whole horizon, uninterrupted contributions, and no taxes, fees or inflation. In reality returns fluctuate, and a billion dong fifteen years from now buys less than a billion today. Treat the output as a planning scenario, not a guarantee.

Worked example: how long from 50.000.000 VND to 1 billion?

Illustrative assumptions: a starting amount of 50.000.000 VND, a constant 9%/year return, contributions at the start of each month, no withdrawals, target 1.000.000.000 VND.

12.000.0005.2 years794.000.000224.629.206

Read the table top to bottom: raising the monthly contribution from 3.000.000 to 12.000.000 pulls the time-to-billion from 12.9 years down to 5.2 years. Notice that the slow-and-steady path (top row) earns the most interest in absolute terms — 494.070.641 VND — because the money compounds for longer. That is the reward compounding pays for patience.

How much does a bigger head start help?

Keeping the contribution at 5.000.000 VND/month and the assumed 9%/year, starting with 200.000.000 VND instead of 50.000.000 VND cuts the timeline from 9.6 years to about 7.4 years. By contrast, leaving 50.000.000 VND to compound with no further contributions takes about 34.8 years to reach a billion at 9%/year — a reminder that the discipline of regular contributions usually beats the size of the starting pot. Aiming at a different number (2 billion, 5 billion)? Just change the target field in the calculator.

Frequently asked questions

How long does it take to reach 1 billion VND saving 5 million a month?

It depends on your starting amount and return. Under an illustrative assumption: starting from 50.000.000 VND, adding 5.000.000 VND/month at 9%/year, you cross one billion dong in about 9.6 years (115 months). Of that, 625.000.000 VND is money you paid in and 386.280.264 VND is interest. Real returns vary by asset and period — enter your own number in the calculator.

What does the millionaire calculator actually compute?

It runs a month-by-month simulation: each month it adds your contribution at the start, then multiplies the balance by (1 + monthly rate), where the monthly rate = (1 + annual rate)^(1/12) − 1. The loop stops at the first month the balance reaches the target. Verifiable example: 50.000.000 VND + 5.000.000 VND/month at 9%/year reaches 1.000.000.000 VND after 115 months (about 9.6 years).

How much should I contribute each month to hit 1 billion VND faster?

More is faster, with diminishing returns. From the same 50.000.000 VND start at an illustrative 9%/year: 3.000.000/month takes 12.9 years; 5.000.000 takes 9.6 years; 12.000.000 takes only 5.2 years. Pick a contribution you can sustain — keeping it up for years matters more than a high amount you abandon halfway.

Is the 9% per year return in the examples a real rate?

No. The 9%/year used throughout this page is an illustrative assumption chosen to make the math easy to follow and verify. Actual VND deposit rates and investment returns vary by bank, asset and period, and nothing here is promised. Enter whatever return fits your situation — the simulation behaves identically at any rate. It is wise to also test a lower figure: at 6%/year the same 50.000.000 VND + 5.000.000 VND/month plan takes about 10.8 years, while 12%/year takes about 8.6 years.

Will 1 billion VND in 10–15 years be worth as much as it is today?

Not quite — inflation erodes purchasing power, so a billion dong on the day you reach the goal buys less than a billion today. This calculator works in nominal terms and does not subtract inflation. To see what a future billion is worth in today's prices, pair it with FiMo's inflation calculator, or simply set a slightly higher target to build in a buffer against rising prices.

Does a bigger starting amount get me to a billion much faster?

It helps, but often less than steady contributions do. Keeping 5.000.000 VND/month at 9%/year: starting from 50.000.000 VND takes 9.6 years, while starting from 200.000.000 VND (four times as much) only shortens it to 7.4 years. The reason is that most of the final balance comes from the contributions and the interest they earn, so your monthly contribution is the lever you control best.

Why does the slow saver earn more total interest in the table?

Because their money compounds for longer. In the worked example, contributing 3.000.000/month reaches a billion in 12.9 years and earns 494.070.641 VND of interest, whereas 12.000.000/month gets there in 5.2 years with less interest. A faster timeline means less time for compounding to work — the trade-off is reaching the goal sooner versus letting interest do more of the heavy lifting.
