Vietnam Overtime Pay Calculator (VND)
If you work in Vietnam, the Labour Code 2019 (Article 98) sets statutory minimum premiums for any hours worked beyond your normal schedule — and the premium depends on when the overtime falls. Overtime on a normal working day must pay at least 150% of your normal hourly wage; on a weekly rest day (usually Sunday) at least 200%; and on a public holiday, Tet, or paid-leave day at least 300%. Crucially, that 300% is on top of the holiday pay a day-rated employee already receives for the day itself.
The number most people get wrong is the normal hourly wage that everything multiplies from. If your contract states a monthly salary, you divide it by the standard working hours in the month — a figure your employer sets, typically around 8 hours times the number of working days in that month. The calculator above lets you either enter an hourly rate directly, or enter a monthly salary plus standard hours and let it derive the rate, then split your overtime into three buckets: weekday, weekly-rest-day, and public-holiday hours.
The worked example on this page uses a salary of 10.000.000 VND/month over 208 standard hours — about 48.077 VND/hour. That hourly figure is an illustrative assumption, not a claim about your contract: one weekday overtime hour then pays 72.115 VND, which is 24.038 VND more than an ordinary hour. Replace it with the real numbers from your own employment contract for an accurate result.
How statutory overtime pay is computed
The legal basis
Under the Labour Code 2019, Article 98, overtime is paid as a multiple of your normal hourly wage (or the unit wage for the work performed), with these statutory minimums:
| When the overtime falls | Minimum | Multiplier |
|---|---|---|
| Normal working day | 150% | × 1.5 |
| Weekly rest day | 200% | × 2.0 |
| Public holiday, Tet, paid-leave day | 300% | × 3.0 |
On a public holiday the 300% is in addition to the day's holiday pay that a day-rated employee keeps. Night work (10 p.m.–6 a.m.) carries further add-ons under Article 98; this calculator handles daytime overtime, so add any night-shift premium separately.
The formulas the calculator uses
Normal hourly wage (when salary is quoted monthly):
Hourly wage = Monthly salary ÷ Standard working hours per month
Overtime pay for each band:
Band pay = Hourly wage × Multiplier × Hours worked
Total overtime is the sum across the three bands. Every figure in the worked example below comes from exactly these two formulas, so you can reproduce each row with a calculator or spreadsheet.
Notes on standard hours and statutory caps
- Standard hours vary. Employers compute them from the actual number of working days in the month (commonly 8 hours × 24–27 days). The 208-hour divisor on this page is an illustrative convention.
- The Labour Code sets overtime caps: generally no more than 50% of normal daily hours in a day, no more than 40 hours per month, and usually no more than 200 hours per year (up to 300 in some sectors). This tool does not enforce those caps — check compliance yourself.
- The output is gross (pre-tax) overtime pay. It is still part of your personal-income-tax base alongside base salary, so pair this with FiMo's Gross–Net calculator to see the take-home impact.
Worked example: a 10.000.000 VND/month salary, overtime in all three bands
Illustrative assumptions: a monthly salary of 10.000.000 VND over 208 standard hours/month → a normal hourly wage of about 48.077 VND/hour. During the month the employee works 10 weekday overtime hours, 6 rest-day hours and 4 public-holiday hours.
| Band | Multiplier | Pay per hour | Hours | Amount |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Weekday | 150% | 72.115 | 10 | 721.154 |
| Weekly rest day | 200% | 96.154 | 6 | 576.923 |
| Public holiday | 300% | 144.231 | 4 | 576.923 |
| Total | 20 | 1.875.000 |
Total overtime for the month is 1.875.000 VND. Notice the leverage of the multiplier: although the 4 holiday hours are fewer than the 10 weekday hours, the 300% rate makes those 4 hours worth 576.923 VND — close to the 721.154 VND from 10 weekday hours. One holiday hour (144.231 VND) is worth twice a weekday overtime hour (72.115 VND) and three times an ordinary working hour (48.077 VND).
If your employer uses a different standard-hours figure (for example 26 days × 8 hours = 208 hours, or 24 days = 192 hours), the hourly wage changes and the whole table scales with it. Enter the standard hours your HR team actually applies so the numbers match your payslip.
Frequently asked questions
What are the overtime pay rates in Vietnam?
Under the Labour Code 2019, Article 98, the statutory minimum overtime pay is 150% of the normal hourly wage on a normal working day, 200% on a weekly rest day, and 300% on a public holiday, Tet or paid-leave day. The 300% is in addition to the holiday pay a day-rated employee already receives for that day.
How do I work out my hourly wage from a monthly salary?
Divide your monthly salary by the standard working hours in the month. The standard-hours figure is set by your employer — typically 8 hours × the number of working days in the month. Illustrative example: 10.000.000 VND ÷ 208 hours ≈ 48.077 VND/hour. Multiply that by the overtime multiplier (1.5 / 2.0 / 3.0) and the hours worked.
How much is 10 hours of weekday overtime on a 10 million VND salary?
Assuming a 10.000.000 VND/month salary over 208 standard hours (≈ 48.077 VND/hour): 10 weekday overtime hours pay 48.077 × 1.5 × 10 = 721.154 VND. Each weekday overtime hour is 72.115 VND, which is 24.038 VND above an ordinary hour. Substitute your own salary and standard hours.
How is public-holiday overtime paid?
Overtime on a public holiday, Tet or paid-leave day is paid at least 300% of the normal hourly wage — and that 300% is on top of the holiday pay a day-rated employee keeps for the day itself. In this page's example, 4 holiday hours earn 576.923 VND because each hour pays 144.231 VND (three times the ordinary 48.077 VND).
Is there a limit on how much overtime I can work?
Yes. The Labour Code 2019 caps overtime at generally no more than 50% of normal daily hours in a single day, no more than 40 hours per month, and usually no more than 200 hours per year (up to 300 hours for certain sectors). This calculator does not enforce those caps — verify that your overtime arrangement stays within the legal limits.
Is overtime pay taxed in Vietnam?
Overtime is part of employment income for personal income tax, but the law grants relief for the premium portion — the extra paid above the ordinary-hours rate created by the 150/200/300% multipliers. This calculator returns the gross (pre-tax) overtime amount; pair it with FiMo's Gross–Net calculator to estimate the impact on take-home pay.
What standard-hours figure should I use?
There is no single fixed number: standard hours = 8 hours × the actual number of working days in the month, usually somewhere between 192 and 216 hours. This page uses 208 hours as an illustrative convention only. Ask your HR team which figure they apply, since it determines your hourly wage and therefore every overtime amount.
