Tip Calculator
The tip calculator helps you quickly compute the tip amount and total bill after adding the tip. It also supports bill splitting for multiple people — handy when dining out with friends or colleagues.
Illustrative scenario: Bill of 500.000, tip at 15% → tip 75.000, total 575.000. Split 4 ways: each person pays 143.750.
How the calculation works
Tip amount
Tip = Bill × tip percentage
= 500.000 × 15% = 75.000
Total bill
Total = Bill + Tip
= 500.000 + 75.000 = 575.000
Per-person split
Each person = Total / Number of people
= 575.000 / 4 = 143.750 per person
Common tipping guidelines
| Tip % | When to use |
|---|---|
| 10% | Average service |
| 15% | Good service (most common) |
| 20% | Excellent service |
| 25%+ | Outstanding service or holidays |
Important considerations when tipping
Many restaurants in Vietnam already include a 5% service charge on the bill. In this case, additional tipping is optional but you may still leave small change if satisfied. When traveling abroad, research local tipping customs first. In Japan, tipping can be considered offensive, while in the United States, a 15-20% tip is socially expected.
Quick mental math
To calculate a 15% tip without a calculator: find 10% (move decimal one place left), then add half of that. For a 500.000 bill: 10% = 50.000, plus half (25.000) = 75.000. This trick works for any bill amount and is faster than pulling out your phone.
Worked example: Dinner for 4 people
| Item | Value |
|---|---|
| Bill | 500.000 |
| Tip (15%) | 75.000 |
| Total | 575.000 |
| Split 4 ways | 143.750 / person |
Comparing tip levels
| Tip % | Tip amount | Total | Per person |
|---|---|---|---|
| 10% | 50.000 | 550.000 | 137.500 |
| 15% | 75.000 | 575.000 | 143.750 |
| 20% | 100.000 | 600.000 | 150.000 |
Tips
- Check if the bill already includes a service charge. If so, additional tipping may not be necessary.
- In Vietnam, tipping is not mandatory but appreciated, especially at upscale restaurants.
- Round the tip to a convenient number for easier payment.
Frequently asked questions
What percentage should I tip?
In Vietnam, 5-10% is common. In the US and many Western countries, 15-20% is standard. Adjust based on service quality and local culture.
Should I tip on the pre-tax or post-tax amount?
Conventionally, tips are calculated on the pre-tax bill. Some people tip on the total for simplicity — the difference is usually small.
Is a service charge the same as a tip?
No. A service charge is mandatory and collected by the restaurant. A tip is voluntary and goes directly to the staff. If a service charge is included, additional tipping is optional.
Should I split the tip equally or by what each person ordered?
Splitting equally is simplest and works when everyone ordered similarly. Splitting by item is more accurate when someone ordered significantly more expensive dishes.
Should I tip for bad service?
If service was genuinely poor, you may reduce or skip the tip. However, consider whether the issue was with the kitchen rather than the server.
Does the calculator include VAT?
The calculator computes tip based on the bill amount you enter. It does not add VAT automatically. If you want to tip on the pre-tax amount, enter the pre-tax figure.
